Hermann, Van der Dussen Lead South Africa to Final with Commanding Win Over Zimbabwe
A blazing half-century from Rubin Hermann, backed by a composed knock from Rassie van der Dussen, powered the Proteas to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Zimbabwe in their Tri-Series T20I clash at Harare Sports Club on Sunday. With 16 balls to spare, the Proteas chased down a target of 145, knocking Zimbabwe out of the competition and securing their place in Saturday’s final against unbeaten New Zealand.
Hermann was named Player of the Match for his explosive innings of 63 off 36 balls, marking his first T20I fifty. Speaking after the match, Proteas captain Van der Dussen praised the team’s performance:
“Overall, I felt there were improvements in all aspects. The seamers were great and the death bowling was excellent. Rubin was very good. We’ll look at the New Zealand matches (two to come) as a three-match series. We’re 1-0 down at present so we’re looking to equal that and win the final.”

Zimbabwe’s Struggle with the Bat
After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Van der Dussen’s side made early inroads into Zimbabwe’s batting lineup. On a pitch that offered seam movement and inconsistent bounce, scoring was tough in the early overs. The first boundary only came in the third over, with Wessly Madhevere lofting Lungi Ngidi over mid-on. But he didn’t last long—caught by Van der Dussen off Corbin Bosch in the next over.
Bosch struck again soon after, removing Clive Madande with a return catch. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza added to the troubles, falling to Nqaba Peter as he swept straight to Nandre Burger at deep square leg, leaving Zimbabwe reeling at 44/3 in the ninth over.
A promising 78-run partnership between opener Brian Bennett and Ryan Burl briefly revived Zimbabwe’s innings. Bennett accelerated well, reaching 61 off 43 balls with seven fours and three sixes—his fourth T20I fifty. But Ngidi deceived him with a slower yorker to bring the stand to an end. Burl remained unbeaten on 36 off 31 but found little support from the lower order, as South Africa’s bowlers tightened the screws in the death overs.
Bosch (2/16) and Burger (1/20) were particularly effective, while Peter and Ngidi claimed a wicket apiece. The final wicket came via a run-out involving George Linde and wicketkeeper Lhuan-dre Pretorius, as Tony Munyonga was caught short attempting a risky second run. Zimbabwe closed on 144/6—a below-par total.

Proteas’ Response: A Tale of Two Halves
Chasing 145, South Africa endured a shaky start. Both openers, Pretorius and Reeza Hendricks, fell cheaply to pacer Tinotenda Maposa. At 28/2 in the sixth over, Zimbabwe sensed an opportunity.
But Hermann and Van der Dussen quickly regained control, building a match-winning 106-run partnership off 68 balls. Zimbabwe’s spinners faltered under pressure—Raza was particularly expensive, leaking 26 runs in just two overs. Across five overs, the three Zimbabwean spinners conceded 51 runs without taking a wicket.
Hermann was in dominant form, smashing three fours and four sixes in his 63. His clean hitting, especially down the ground, shifted the momentum entirely in South Africa’s favor. Van der Dussen played the anchor role perfectly, finishing unbeaten on 52 from 42 deliveries—his 10th T20I half-century.
With the result all but sealed, Hermann was eventually bowled by Richard Ngarava, but the finish was left to Van der Dussen and Dewald Brevis. Brevis added a touch of flair, closing the game with a six and a four to seal the win in style.
Score Summary:
- Zimbabwe: 144/6 (Brian Bennett 61, Ryan Burl 36*; Bosch 2/16, Burger 1/20)
- South Africa: 145/3 in 17.2 overs (Hermann 63, Van der Dussen 52*; Maposa 2/23)
