Bafana Bafana have secured a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dominant 3-0 win over Rwanda in their final qualifier on Tuesday, 14 October, in Mbombela.

Thalente Mbatha scored early in the first half. Oswin Appollis soon doubled the lead, putting the hosts in control. His goal sparked celebrations, with Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie high-fiving SAFA vice-president Anastasia Tsichlas in the stands.
Evidence Makgopa sealed the win with a header in the 72nd minute. However, South Africa still needed Nigeria to beat Benin — and the Super Eagles delivered, winning 4-0 in Uyo. The result pushed Benin down to third in Group C, sending them through.
Overcoming Setbacks on the Road to Qualification
The road to qualification wasn’t smooth. South Africa dropped four key points in their previous matches — drawing 1-1 with Nigeria in September and 0-0 with Zimbabwe on 10 October.

Still, coach Hugo Broos stayed confident. Appointed in 2021 as Molefi Ntseki’s successor, he backed his team to finish the job.
“It’s amazing to me that people are starting to doubt that we can qualify,” Broos said before the final games. “They think Benin will win twice… but I don’t think it will happen.”
