Bafana Bafana Focus on Improvement Ahead of Mexico Clash
Bafana Bafana remain hard at work as they continue their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With the tournament opener drawing closer, coach Hugo Broos and his squad are determined to sharpen their performance before facing co-hosts Mexico.

The South African national team has been based in Pachuca, Mexico, since arriving earlier this week. Their opening World Cup fixture against Mexico will take place at the iconic Estadio Azteca on 11 June 2026.
As part of their build-up, The Team faced Jamaica in an international friendly at Estadio Hidalgo on Saturday. The match ended 1-1 after second-half goals from Lyle Foster and Jamaica’s Dwayne Atkinson.
Broos Demands More From His Squad
Despite avoiding defeat, Broos was far from satisfied with what he saw from his players. The Belgian coach admitted the performance fell below expectations and stressed the need for immediate improvement.
“The performance was not what I expected,” Broos said after the match.
He explained that the coaching staff would carefully analyse the game to identify the team’s shortcomings. Furthermore, he believes there is still significant work to be done before the opening match against Mexico.
“I thought we were close, but for me it was a disappointing game this afternoon,” he added.
According to Broos, mentality played a major role in the team’s display. He emphasised that Bafana Bafana must raise their intensity and commitment if they hope to compete successfully on football’s biggest stage.
“We have to do more, much more, than what we did this afternoon,” he said.
Jamaica Coach Shares His View on Bafana Bafana

Meanwhile, Jamaica coach Rudolph Speid suggested that Bafana Bafana did not fully showcase their abilities during the friendly encounter.
Speid felt the South Africans approached the match with caution. He believes some players may have been focused on avoiding injuries while also trying to impress the coaching staff ahead of the tournament.
“As it relates to South Africa, I think they were playing within themselves,” Speid said.
He added that the team appeared capable of delivering much more than they showed at Estadio Hidalgo.
Tough Test Awaits at Estadio Azteca
Looking ahead, Speid expects a far more demanding challenge when South Africa face Mexico in front of a passionate home crowd.
He predicted that the hosts would apply relentless pressure, especially during the opening stages of the match. Mexico’s high-intensity pressing game and the atmosphere inside Estadio Azteca could create a difficult environment for the South Africans.

However, Speid noted that the pressure may ease as the game progresses.
For now, The Team have several days to fine-tune their preparations. The focus will be on correcting mistakes, improving performances, and ensuring they are ready for their biggest test yet when the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins.
