Argentina Overcomes Early Setback
Argentina produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals. The South American giants faced an uphill battle after Egypt made a fast start at Atlanta Stadium.

Yasser Ibrahim gave Egypt the lead in the 15th minute with a powerful header. Soon after, Argentina earned a penalty and had the perfect chance to respond. However, captain Lionel Messi saw his spot kick brilliantly saved, extending his unwanted World Cup record for missed penalties.
Messi Inspires Argentina’s Fightback
Egypt strengthened their advantage in the 67th minute when Mostafa Zico found the net. As a result, Argentina looked to be heading for an early exit. Egypt defended with determination and threatened on the counterattack whenever possession changed hands.

Nevertheless, Argentina refused to give up. Cristian Romero sparked the comeback in the 79th minute by heading home a cross from Messi. Just four minutes later, Messi made amends for his earlier miss with a clinical finish from close range. The equaliser shifted the momentum completely and lifted the entire team.

With confidence growing, Argentina pushed for a winner deep into stoppage time. Their persistence paid off in the 92nd minute when Enzo Fernández fired home the decisive goal. The dramatic finish sent Argentina into the last eight and completed one of the tournament’s most memorable comebacks.
At the final whistle, Messi struggled to hold back his emotions before celebrating with his teammates. Relief quickly replaced disappointment after his missed penalty.

The Argentine captain now leads the tournament’s scoring chart with eight goals. He also extended his all-time World Cup tally to 21 goals while becoming the first player to score in nine consecutive World Cup matches.
