All Blacks make a powerful start
The All Blacks produced a stunning second-half performance to beat the Springboks 33-16 at Ellis Park on Saturday.
The victory gave New Zealand a 1-0 lead in the four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.
However, the Springboks started strongly and led 13-12 at half-time. Andre Esterhuizen scored their only try, while Cheslin Kolbe added two penalties and a conversion.
The All Blacks responded through Will Jordan and Josh Moorby, who both crossed the line during an entertaining opening half.
New Zealand turn the game around
After the break, the All Blacks raised their intensity and took control of the contest.
Fabian Holland scored a crucial try, before Luke Jacobson added another to increase New Zealand’s advantage.
Jordan then completed his second try of the afternoon, sealing an impressive individual performance.
Consequently, the All Blacks finished with five tries, while the Springboks managed just one.
New Zealand also showed remarkable defensive discipline when South Africa applied pressure near the try line.
The Springboks struggled to turn possession and territory into points. Their errors and indiscipline also allowed the visitors to build momentum.
All Blacks seize early series advantage
The result represents a major statement from the All Blacks under new head coach Dave Rennie.
Furthermore, beating the world champion Springboks at their Johannesburg stronghold gives New Zealand valuable confidence.
The All Blacks will now prepare for the second Test in Cape Town on Saturday.
