Etzebeth Hit with 12-Match Suspension
Boks Lock Eben Etzebeth has received a 12-match ban for an intentional eye gouge on Welsh flanker Alex Mann during the Springboks’ clash in Cardiff on 22 November 2025.
The Springbok lock, Eben Etzebeth appeared before a disciplinary committee. It had been expected that the outcome would only be confirmed on Sunday, but the committee released its findings earlier, publishing the decision on Thursday.
The panel ruled that Eben Etzebeth’s actions were deliberate and justified an entry-level suspension of 18 weeks. His remorse and strong disciplinary record reduced the punishment to 12 weeks.
His ban could have been far longer. Similar offences have previously resulted in suspensions lasting more than a year.
Boks Lock Eben Etzebeth will return to action on 27 March 2026, making him available for the entire Springbok season.
Committee Findings and Match Breakdown
The disciplinary body explained its decision in a formal statement.
“South Africa number 19, Eben Etzebeth, appeared before an independent Disciplinary Committee via video link after receiving a red card for an act of foul play contrary to Law 9.12 in the match between South Africa and Wales on 22 November 2025,” the statement read.
The committee was chaired by Christopher Quinlan KC and included former England internationals Leon Lloyd and Becky Essex.
After reviewing all evidence, it concluded that eye contact was intentional. An 18-week mid-range entry point was therefore appropriate.
Six weeks were removed for mitigating factors, resulting in a 12-week suspension.
