Chimaev Secures Middleweight Title with Dominant Victory Over Du Plessis
Khamzat Chimaev delivered a masterclass in grappling at UFC 319, capturing the middleweight title with a unanimous decision win over Dricus du Plessis. In Saturday’s main event, Chimaev imposed his wrestling-heavy game plan from start to finish, controlling du Plessis on the ground and neutralizing any attempts at offense. All three judges scored the bout 50-44 in Chimaev’s favor, as he improved his professional record to 15-0.
Despite his best efforts, Dricus du Plessis had no answer for Chimaev’s relentless top control and positional awareness.
“The man has incredible control on the top,” du Plessis said post-fight. “It wasn’t a matter of strength—it was almost as if he knew what your next move was going to be. He got it without using too much power.”
Although the Dricus Du Plessis managed a brief comeback attempt late in the fight, even taking Chimaev back in the final moments, it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. The loss marks the first of Dricus du Plessis’ UFC career, ending a 10-fight unbeaten run in the promotion.
