Etzebeth Eager for a Change of Fortune in Dublin

Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth, who earned his 139th Test cap against France two weeks ago, says the team is excited for Saturday’s Castle Lager Outgoing Tour clash with Ireland at the Aviva Stadium. He added that the match offers a “nice opportunity” to change their fortunes in Dublin, where the Boks last won in 2012.

The sides last met in South Africa during the Castle Lager Incoming Series in July 2024, sharing the spoils with one win each. Etzebeth warned, however, that facing Ireland at home is a different challenge against a “great team”.

“They’ve been in the top three of the world rankings for years,” said Eben Etzebeth. “They are a quality outfit and we are looking forward to this game.”

He said the fixture stood out from the moment the players received their calendar. “We haven’t won here in a while, so it’s a nice opportunity for us,” he said.

Eben Etzebeth Dismisses Revenge Talk and Focuses on the Present

Eben Etzebeth dismissed suggestions that the 19-16 defeat in Dublin in 2022 will drive the Boks to seek revenge. “This is a completely different challenge. That was over a year and a half ago,” he said. “A lot can happen in rugby in one week.”

Asked about Irish-based players RG Snyman and Jean Kleyn, as well as assistant coaches Felix Jones and Jerry Flannery, Eben Etzebeth said their insight is helpful but will not catch Ireland off guard. “We see them as part of the Springboks, and we get along very well with all of them,” he said. “Ireland will be smart and probably change a few things.”

Springboks assistant coach Mzwandile Stick confirmed that Franco Mostert, red-carded against Italy last week, will have a disciplinary hearing within two days. Lood de Jager, who the referee sent off against France, will also appeal his suspension.

The Springboks began their on-field preparation for Saturday’s Test on Monday afternoon. Kick-off is at 19:40 (SA time) where you can watch Eben Etzebeth in action.
