Antonelli Claims Victory and Championship Lead
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, marking his second consecutive win. As a result, the 19-year-old Italian became the youngest driver to lead the Formula One world championship standings.
Although he started from pole position, Kimi Antonelli struggled off the line. However, he capitalized on a mid-race safety car, which allowed him to move into the lead. From there, he controlled the race and finished ahead of Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc.
As he crossed the finish line, Kimi Antonelli celebrated enthusiastically and praised his car’s pace. Consequently, he now leads the championship after three races, building on his maiden win in China two weeks earlier.
Meanwhile, his teammate George Russell, who began the day at the top of the standings, finished fourth. Russell had challenged Piastri early on but lost ground after pitting just before the safety car.
Elsewhere, Lando Norris finished fifth, followed by Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly. Max Verstappen, who had dominated in Japan for four consecutive years, could only manage eighth after starting 11th.

Kimi Antonelli started on pole for the second race in a row, continuing his impressive early-season form. Nevertheless, he had a poor launch and dropped to sixth by the first corner.
Piastri quickly took the lead, while Leclerc followed closely behind. In addition, Norris, Russell, and Hamilton all passed Antonelli in the opening moments.
Russell then pressured Piastri, initiating a tense battle at the front. At the same time, Antonelli worked his way back through the field.
Midway through the race, a crash involving Ollie Bearman brought out the safety car. Bearman required assistance off the track, and his team later confirmed a knee contusion.
Crucially, Antonelli pitted just after the safety car was deployed. This timely decision proved decisive, as he rejoined the race in the lead.
In contrast, Russell’s earlier pit stop cost him track position. He fell behind Hamilton and later Leclerc, dropping out of contention for victory.
Kimi Antonelli steadily extended his lead, while Piastri held onto second place. As a result, Mercedes narrowly missed out on another one-two finish.
Although Bearman’s crash looked severe, initial X-rays showed no fractures. The young driver had made strong progress after starting from 18th.
Looking ahead, Formula One will take an extended break until the Miami Grand Prix on May 3. Notably, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races scheduled for April have been cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
