Lions Young Gun Ready for the Big Stage

As the race for playoff places in the Vodacom URC intensifies, the Lions’ next generation looks ready to step up.
This weekend, the Joburg-based side returns to action with a fierce test against the Sharks at Ellis Park. Meanwhile, the visitors arrive with confidence and clear intent.
U21 captain Siba Mahashe hopes to earn a spot in coach Ivan van Rooyen’s matchday 23. Importantly, he believes he can handle the jump to senior rugby.
Mahashe made his senior debut earlier this year against French club Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup. On that occasion, the Lions claimed a 43-33 victory at Ellis Park.
“Obviously there is that jump from junior level to senior level,” Mahashe said. “However, I’ve trained with the guys and got used to the physicality. So, in that game against Lyon, I felt prepared.”
The Sharks, however, travel to Johannesburg with momentum and muscle. In fact, they are pushing hard for a top-eight finish.
They rely on forward dominance and a smart kicking game. Therefore, Mahashe understands the size of the challenge facing the Lions pack.
“We know the Sharks are a very physical team, so they’re going to come at us,” he said. “They’ve also got a good kicking game. As a result, we’ve worked on plans to try and nullify that.”

Building Depth and Leadership
At the same time, Mahashe continues to grow in a squad filled with experienced campaigners. He trains alongside powerful forwards such as Ruan Venter, Jarod Cairns and Renzo du Plessis.
Consequently, he benefits from daily exposure to high standards.
“I’m around people who can mentor me,” he said. “They’re very good, powerful players. So I’ve got people to look up to who help me at training.”
Although the Lions boast strong leadership, the culture encourages every player to speak up. In addition, responsibility spreads across the squad.
“We’ve got set leaders in the team,” Mahashe said. “But everyone is encouraged to lead and raise things when we see them.”
Ultimately, he sees each training session as an audition.
“Every training is an opportunity to put yourself out there. Hopefully, the coaches see something that can help the team move forward.”
