Lions Crush Sharks in Opening Currie Cup Statement Win
The Fidelity ADT Lions began their Currie Cup campaign in style, thrashing defending champions Sharks 46-5 on Saturday at Ellis Park. The dominant win was a measure of revenge for last year’s narrow, last-minute defeat in the final.
From the outset, the Lions showed their class. With several URC players, the Lions outclassed a young Sharks side, who spent most of the match defending and chasing possession. The gap in experience and execution was stark.

Dominant Forward Display
The Lions’ forwards set the tone with a powerful scrummaging performance that laid the groundwork for their attacking dominance. The Sharks began well, but the Lions soon took control, found their rhythm, and dominated the rest of the match completely.
Wing Rabz Maxwane starred with two tries and also assisted one for standout loose forward Jarrod Cairns. In total, the Lions ran in seven tries to the Sharks’ lone effort late in the game.
Lions Shine Across the Field
It was a complete team performance from the Lions. Cairns led strongly, backed by Steenkamp, Landsberg, Jonker, and Dobela, who expertly controlled the game’s tempo throughout the match.
For the Sharks, Bester showed flashes of threat, while captain Hatton and Mbonambi fought hard despite the team’s tough loss.

Clinical Execution
The Lions struck early through Cairns after slick handling, then Maxwane scored from Steyn’s kick following a brilliant Davids break.
The referee awarded the Lions a penalty try after Sharks winger Phikolomzi Sobahle deliberately knocked down a final pass that would have given Davids a certain try. After showing Sobahle a yellow card, the Lions seized the advantage with the Sharks down to 14 men.
Maxwane added his second before halftime, securing the four-try bonus point before the break.
Second-Half Onslaught
The Sharks continued to struggle in the second half. Dobela slotted a penalty to extend the lead, and then Sharks flyhalf Jean Smith was controversially yellow-carded for a deliberate knockdown despite appearing to wrap his arms in the tackle.
Once again reduced to 14, the Sharks couldn’t hold back the tide. Davids crossed for a debut try to put the result beyond doubt.
Sobahle scored a late consolation try, but Jonker and Horn crossed soon after to seal a dominant Lions win in style.

Strong Start, Lessons Ahead
It was a dream start for the Johannesburg side, who sent a strong warning to the rest of the competition. For the Sharks, the long trip back down the N3 will be filled with tough lessons as they regroup and prepare to face more seasoned opponents in the weeks ahead.
