Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus expressed deep disappointment following South Africa’s shocking 38-22 loss to Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, 16 August 2025. After racing to a 22-0 lead within the first 18 minutes, the Boks were completely outplayed for the remainder of the match, conceding 38 unanswered points in a dramatic implosion.

“It’s one of the most embarrassing press conferences I’ve had in a long time,” Erasmus admitted. “Not just because we were awful, but because they were very good. Credit to Australia.”
The Springboks have shown a pattern of allowing teams back into games — something Erasmus noted with frustration. “It was the same against Italy earlier this year. We were 27-3 up and still let them back in,” he said.
Coaching Blame and Tactical Failures from Erasmus

Erasmus didn’t shy away from accepting responsibility, stating that the Springboks coaching team were outsmarted tactically by Joe Schmidt’s Australian side. “We got it terribly wrong as coaches. They beat us in most departments — scrum, lineouts, and the breakdown. Siya Kolisi’s injury and Marco van Staden’s HIA shifted the momentum, and the game slipped away from us.”
The Boks started strong but faded, struggling even at altitude where they were expected to have the edge. “They just got stronger and stronger. That’s a credit to what Joe Schmidt is building — a physically and mentally strong group of players,” Erasmus said.

“Erasmus and his coaching staff had already selected the team for the upcoming rematch in Cape Town, but he hinted at making possible changes.” “Given that performance, we’ll have to rethink it; in fact, it might even force us to make different calls.”
Erasmus concluded with a brutally honest assessment: “I can try butter it up and make it sound respectful, but we were really dogsh*t. The effort may have been there, but not the precision or accuracy. “We feel disappointed, and we failed our supporters.”
