Tony Brown & his Inside Knowledge Adds Edge for Boks
Springbok attack coach Tony Brown says his deep understanding of the All Blacks could give South Africa an edge ahead of their Rugby Championship showdown at Eden Park next Saturday.
The World Champions head into the clash at New Zealand’s fortress, where the hosts are unbeaten in 50 consecutive Tests since 1994. The Boks haven’t tasted victory at the venue since way back in 1937.
Tony Brown, a former All Blacks flyhalf and Highlanders coach, is back on familiar soil and eager to contribute to the Springboks‘ planning.

“As a Kiwi in the Springbok setup, I get asked a lot about the haka, about New Zealand rugby, and how the All Blacks operate. I’ve got some deep insights that I hope will help,” Tony Brown said.
At 50, Tony Browns’ experience with Robertson’s staff gives him insights that could help Rassie Erasmus shape Springbok strategy.
“Being part of this team is a huge honour. Coaching against my country is a unique challenge, and I thrive on being part of the biggest games.”

Attack Built on Structure, Not Just Flair
Tony Brown guides Bok flyhalves with a focus on structure, control, and game management over individual flair.
“They each bring their own strengths, but my approach with them is the same. They need to manage the game, control field position, and attack space when it opens up,” Tony Brown explained.

He also stressed that a successful Springbok attack depends on full-team involvement – not just backline brilliance.
“You can’t attack with just the backs. Forwards have to provide momentum and win the gain line battle. When both units work together, we create real opportunities.”
