How to Play Blackjack

Objective: The main goal in Blackjack is to have your hand value (the sum of your cards) closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand without exceeding 21.

Card Values:

  • Number cards (2-10): face value.
  • Face cards (Jack, Queen, King): 10 points each.
  • Ace: 1 or 11 points (whichever is more favorable for the hand).

Game Setup:

  1. Deck: Standard game uses one to eight decks of 52 cards.
  2. Players: Typically played between one to seven players against a dealer.
  3. Initial Deal: Each player is dealt two cards face-up. The dealer receives one card face-up (the “upcard”) and one card face-down (the “hole card”).

Basic Gameplay Steps:

  1. Initial Decisions:
    • Blackjack: If a player or the dealer has an Ace and a 10-point card (10, Jack, Queen, King) as their first two cards, they have “Blackjack” and win 1.5 times their bet, unless the dealer also has Blackjack, resulting in a push (tie).
    • Insurance: If the dealer’s upcard is an Ace, players can place an insurance bet up to half of their original bet, betting that the dealer has Blackjack. If the dealer has Blackjack, the insurance bet pays 2 to 1.
  2. Player’s Turn:
    • Hit: Take an additional card to increase the total value of the hand.
    • Stand: Keep the current hand value and end your turn.
    • Double Down: Double the original bet and receive only one more card.
    • Split: If the first two cards are of equal value, split them into two separate hands, each with an additional bet equal to the original. Play each hand separately.
    • Surrender: Forfeit half of your bet and end your participation in the hand.
  3. Dealer’s Turn:
    • Reveal Hole Card: The dealer reveals their face-down card.
    • Hit or Stand: The dealer must hit until their cards total 17 or higher. The dealer stands on 17 or higher (some variations require the dealer to hit on a “soft 17,” which is a hand containing an Ace valued as 11).
  4. Outcome Determination:
    • Bust: If a player’s or dealer’s hand exceeds 21, they bust and lose.
    • Comparison: If neither busts, the hand values are compared:
      • Higher hand wins.
      • Equal hands result in a push, and the player’s bet is returned.

Additional Rules and Tips:

  • Soft Hand: A hand containing an Ace that can be counted as 11 without busting. For example, Ace-6 is a soft 17.
  • Hard Hand: A hand without an Ace, or with an Ace that must be counted as 1 to avoid busting. For example, 10-7 or Ace-6-10.

Strategy:

  • Basic strategies involve decisions based on the player’s hand and the dealer’s upcard.
  • Common rules of thumb:
    • Always hit on 8 or less.
    • Stand on 17 or higher.
    • Double down on 11.
    • Split Aces and 8s.
    • Never split 10s or 5s.
