Wales face a massive test when they meet the Springboks in Durban on Saturday. Their task looks even tougher after last year’s crushing defeat in Cardiff. On that occasion, the reigning World Champions dominated from start to finish and secured a record-breaking 73-0 victory.
Former Wales centre Jonathan Davies expects another fierce contest. He believes South Africa will arrive full of confidence and show no signs of easing up.
“I see South Africa having a lot of confidence and swagger. I don’t see them taking any pity on us,” Davies told Betpack.
He also admitted the match could become extremely difficult for Warren Gatland’s side.
“It could be an extremely tough day for our boys. I just want Wales to focus on becoming a tough team to beat.”
Wales Must Improve After Historic Defeat
The previous meeting remains one of the darkest moments in Welsh rugby history. Wales suffered their biggest-ever defeat and failed to score at home for the first time since 1998.
As a result, expectations remain realistic ahead of Saturday’s clash. Davies believes the priority should be competing physically and limiting the damage against the world champions.
“Test match rugby is all about winning in my mind. I’d much rather score nine points and win than score 30 points and lose.”
However, he understands the size of the challenge.
“If Wales can keep it to within 25 points, I’ll take that and they’ll have done well.”
Springboks Rotate Squad for Wales Clash
Although South Africa remain overwhelming favourites, they have made several changes to their starting lineup. The Springboks will hand four players their Test debuts in Durban.
The debutants are:
- Jaco Williams (Wing)
- Vusi Moyo (Flyhalf)
- Ruben van Heerden (Lock)
- Carlu Sadie (Prop)
Even with fresh faces in the squad, the hosts still boast significant depth and experience.
Injury List Weakens Springbok Experience
Despite their strength, South Africa will be without several established stars. Injuries have ruled a number of key players out of selection.
Those unavailable include:
- Eben Etzebeth (Lock)
- Franco Mostert (Utility Forward)
- Andre Esterhuizen (Centre/Flanker)
- Canan Moodie (Utility Back)
- Handre Pollard (Flyhalf)
- Ox Nche (Prop)
Even so, the Springboks remain one of the strongest teams in world rugby. Wales therefore face another stern examination as they look to produce a more competitive performance than their last meeting with the reigning World Champions.
