De Klerk’s Heroics Seal Stunning Win for South Africa
Nadine de Klerk produced a sensational counter-attack from No. 8 to lead South Africa to a thrilling three-wicket victory over tournament favourites India in their Women’s World Cup clash at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
Chasing 252, the Proteas were floundering at 142 for six with just 14 overs remaining when Nadine De Klerk stepped in. With remarkable composure and power, she blasted an unbeaten 84 off just 54 balls, smashing eight fours and five sixes. Her game-changing 69-run partnership with Chloe Tryon (49 off 66 balls) breathed life into South Africa’s hopes after they had earlier collapsed to 81 for five.
Captain Laura Wolvaardt played a vital anchoring role with 70 from 111 balls, but it was Nadine De Klerk who stole the spotlight with her ferocious knock, arguably one of the finest chasing innings in South Africa’s history.

India’s Middle-Order Rescue After Early Collapse
India, too, endured a rocky innings after a promising start. At 55 without loss, India seemed strong until Mlaba (2-46) and Tryon (3-32) reduced them to 102-6.
Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh counter-attacked brilliantly, scoring 94 from 77 balls, hitting nine fours and four sixes. Her 88-run stand with Rana (33 off 24) helped India recover to a competitive total of 251.
Tryon and Mlaba were instrumental with the ball, while Tumi Sekhukhune and Marizanne Kapp added crucial breakthroughs. Sekhukhune’s deceptive slower ball to dismiss top scorer Pratika Rawal was a standout moment.

Proteas Falter Early Before Fightback
South Africa’s chase faltered early as Tazmin Brits fell to a sharp return catch by Kranti Gaud. Wickets kept falling as Luus edged for 5, Kapp was bowled for 20, and Bosch fell for 1.
Wolvaardt and Tryon added 61, but her dismissal left South Africa in deep trouble at 142 for six. De Klerk then flipped the game with explosive hitting and remarkable composure under pressure.
“She’s been hitting the ball like that in the nets for a while, but to see her do it in a match is incredibly special. It was one of the best knocks I’ve seen,” said Wolvaardt.
India and South Africa sit third and fourth after three games; the top four teams qualify for the semifinals.
